Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping is a form of gardening and landscaping for the intent of eliminating irrigation. There are many forms and ways to Xeriscape. The idea when Xeriscaping is selecting plants that are low maintenance and little to no water requirement. In this way you can help reduce water use and save a lot of money on your water bill by not having to water the plants often or at all.

An important part of Xeriscaping is ensuring correct amount of nutrients are in the soil. As the plants don’t need much water, they need to get their nutrients from the soil. Mixing compost and fertilizer into the soil is a way to keep the plants healthy and last longer. Also by mixing the soil it creates a porous soil that keeps moisture better than a compact one.

Some people choose to use local grasses and plants and that can be a good choice. However, some local grasses and plants may not be water efficient. Make sure to do research on the plants you are accepting as water efficient. Another thing to keep in mind is if you live in a Home Owners Association (HOA) area they likely have rules about what types of lawns you can have, so checking with them is important before switching to a water efficient landscape.

The City of Corvallis combined forces with various entities within Oregon and came out with Water Efficient Plants for the Willamette Valley book to help pick plants for Xeriscaping. Here is the link for their page Water Efficient Planting Guide.
