Outdoor Water Conservation

There are many ways to conserve water on the outside of your home. Here are a few ways that you can help reduce outside wasted water.

  • Prioritize your watering needs by watering trees first then shrubs and flowers and then lawn.
  • It is best not to water every day. Less frequent, deep sprinkling will encourage deeper root growth and plants won’t become stressed as quickly when the weather is hot.
  • Let the soil dry between watering. Roots will grow deeper looking for water below the surface as soil dries.
  • Check soil moisture before watering by using a soil moisture meter.
  • Add mulch to your garden beds to lock in moisture and minimize evaporation.
  • Adjust sprinkler timers throughout the year to account for current weather conditions. Doing this can significantly reduce the amount of water consumed on a yearly basis.
  • Check your sprinkler system for leaks and adjust sprinklers to only water plants, not pavement.
  • Water between 8:00 pm to 6:00 am to avoid losing water to wind and evaporation.

Many people use too much water when watering their lawn. How much water you need to use depends on air temperature, daylight and wind. A lawn in the full sun in the summer only needs 0.4 inches a week. The best practice is to use lawn watering gauges. Put the lawn watering gauge on the grass of your lawn and measure the inches of water it collects in an hour. For example, if in 1 hour of watering you get 0.1 inches that means your lawn only needs 4 hours of watering in 1 week. It is also best to move the gauge around your lawn as different parts will get watered differently. The City of Lebanon is offering FREE lawn watering gauges (limit 1 per household).
