Leak Detection

The largest water loss you can encounter will be a leak. Even a drip will cause several gallons to be wasted per day. Those gallons add up to a sizable water bill. Usual leaking sources could be:

  • Leaking toilets. If your toilet makes a water running noise when you are not using it could be the toilet is leaking. Toilets can also be silent while leaking. Add some food coloring to the tank and let sit for 10 minutes. If the bowl shows color you have a leak.
  • Fittings and fixtures throughout the building. Could be leaking under cabinets, walls, underneath the building.
  • Faucets and hose bibs that are not tightly closed.

Here is how to check for a leak at your building.

  • Ensure that all devices and fixtures outside and inside the building are shutoff. Do not use any water while doing the test.
  • Find your water meter. On newer meters there is an indicator for water passing by the meter. On older styles notice the dial and numbers if they are increasing. Read the value that is on the meter.
  • Read the meter again after 10 minutes. If the reading is higher than the previous one you have a leak.

If you are unable to locate your meter you can call (541) 258.4918 and request a City of Lebanon employee to find it for you. The next step would be to look for the leak. Check your building if there is water on the floor anywhere. Checking underneath sinks and in cabinets that have piping in them. Check underneath the building for leaks or pools of water. If the leak cannot be found the next step is to have a plumber find the leak.
